Sssshhhh, no one tell Martin Scorsese…

Fandango has revealed the results of its annual ‘Most Anticipated Movies Survey’ for 2020, and superhero films dominate the top of their list. Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow and The Eternals along with Mulan top the survey. It’s the first time since Fandango has conducted the survey that each of the first four films are directed by women – Patty Jenkins, Cate Shortland, Chloe Zhao and Niki Caro, respectively.

(We’ll assume Scorsese is fully on board with that).

Fandango reports as part of the online survey, “more than 2,000 millennial film fans voted in the last weeks of December for the top movies and performances they were most looking forward to seeing on the big screen in 2020.”

“As we head into the next decade the new cinematic offerings look promising, with inspiring stories and new definitions of the word ‘hero,’” said Fandango correspondent Nikki Novak in a press release. “Adventure-seeking fans can’t wait for Wonder Woman 1984, Black Widow, and Mulan – all films directed by women – to command the big screen. And with invigorating, fresh fare like Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In the Heights, Marvel’s Eternals and Pixar’s Soul, the 2020 box office will offer a cornucopia of welcome surprises.”

While a certain legendary director of gangster films might dispute calling The Eternals “fresh fare,” its place so high on the list must be gratifying for Marvel Studios considering how late in the year the film debuts (Nov. 6) and the relative obscurity of the concept even among comic book fans.

Gal Gadot and Scarlett Johansson for their titular roles as Wonder Woman and Black Widow are also the top 2 ‘Most Anticipated’ actresses, and Wonder Woman 1984‘s Kristen Wiig as Cheetah and Chris Pine as Steve Trevor are the ‘Most Anticipated’ villain and actor, respectively.
